Hawaiian shirts evolved from the palaka shirt worn in the late 1800's by plantation workers. The orginal Hawaiian shirt design was straight bottomed not intended to be tucked in with short sleeves practical in the sub tropical environment. The orginal design checked palaka remained until 1931 when a Yale graduate Ellery J. Chun is credited with designing the first colorful Hawaiian shirt. He is also credited with coining the phrase "aloha shirt". He registered his Aloha tradmark on July 15, 1936 and mass produces the colorful Hawaiian shirts from his family business in downtown Honolulu.
